Setting Up

Get a machine, a terminal and a toolchain that the other courses can assume

For anyone starting the systems track without a working environment — especially readers coming from outside computing, who have been told to "open a terminal" without ever being shown one. Every other course in this track assumes what this one sets up, and says so at the top.

What you will be able to do

  • Choose an environment that fits the machine you actually own, and know its trade-offs
  • Run commands in a terminal and read what comes back, including errors
  • Install and verify git, a C compiler and make on your own machine
  • Create a GitHub account, a repository, and push to it
  • Diagnose the four failures that stop most beginners: not found, permission denied, wrong directory, wrong tool
